Homelessness has grown tremendously over the past few years. The problem is people are being stripped from their homes due to the economy changes. People wanting to build businesses yet you’re taking away people’s homes. Also, when people are getting laid off from their jobs; shops, factories, and stores are closed down due to products being made in other countries rather than our own people are losing money to provide for themselves and/or families. Even veterans are on the street and they’ve fought to defend this country. Personally, this country needs to worry about taking care of our home-front before concerning ourselves about what’s going on in other countries.
Though things can’t change overnight, still there are things that we can do to help the people whom are homeless at least find their peace. Music Therapy can help is different ways, not just beating a drum or singing a tune. With MT, you can learn to express your feelings by strumming a note on a guitar, playing the keys on the piano, or drumming a beat while people are dancing. MT can be used as an outlet for people who suffer from depression, anxiety, or disabilities. There are a few people in downtown charlotte that are homeless and can really sing. They may get a few dollars here and there but, you can tell that the music they’re singing or playing is their passion. I’ve actually spoken to a few homeless people that have stated music makes them feel better to the point they don’t think about how they live in the moment.
The down-side to MT is the fact we can’t take them off the streets, but we can encourage them to find shelter. Also, with MT we can’t sign them to record deals or anything like that, but we can showcase their talents to where they can keep getting money to work on their craft. Music is a universal language that everyone could connect to and I think MT can help the homeless by giving them peace and encouragement by giving them hope.
